Four Daughters
That the line between documentary and fiction need not always be drawn very sharply is shown by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania (The Man Who Sold His Skin) in her new film Four Daughters. What happens when two of your four children disappear? Ben Hania shows it through what happened to Tunisian Olfa. She is the mother of four daughters, but only the youngest two, Eya and Tayssir, are still in her life. The two eldest, Ghofrane and Rahma, disappeared without a trace years ago. Together with Olfa, Eyea and Tayssir, Ben Hania looks back on life before the disappearance. It becomes clear that violent men played a major role, as did the political upheaval at the time.
Ben Hania revives some situations from the past by reenacting them, with Ghofrane and Rahma, and sometimes even Olfa, played by professional actresses. This delivers deeply emotional moments. Nominated for an Oscar.
