There are countless wonderful films to be seen at festivals at home and abroad. So many, in fact, that not all of them reach Dutch film theatres. Luckily, Eye Filmmuseum brings a selection of these films to our country every summer under the banner Previously Unreleased. Eureka is definitely part of that selection.

Also to be seen at Rialto.

Eureka

A story does not necessarily have to be logical and chronological, Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso shows us in his new film Eureka, a journey past different indigenous peoples in the Americas, in very different times. In the hypnotic result, he creates a magical-realistic reality, in black-and-white as well as colour, in which an imposing and majestic Jabiru stork plays a leading role. Besides many non-professional actors, Viggo Mortensen, Maria Medeiros and Chiara Mastroianni, among others, make an appearance.

Around the year 1870, Murphy (Mortnesen) has arrived in a run-down western town where he is looking for his kidnapped daughter. To the present, as Murphy is a character in a film Aliana is watching. She is a policewoman in a Native American reservation, a place full of poverty, drunkenness and aggression. Her niece Sadie, a basketball coach, is fed up with everything and asks her grandfather to make her a magic potion that relieves her of everything. That potion transforms her soul into a huge bird, taking her to the rainforest in 1970s Brazil.
