Ouaga Girls

A group of young women tweak machines and hammer away at a school for auto mechanics in Ouagadougou in this poetic story about life choices, sisterhood and the endeavor to find your own way.

In a country with youth unemployment at 52 percent, jobs are a hot issue. The young girls at a mechanics school in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou are right in the middle of a crucial point in life when their dreams, hopes and courage are confronted with opinions, fears and society’s expectations of what a woman should be. Using interesting narrative solutions, Theresa Traore Dahlberg depicts their last school years and at the same time succeeds at showing the country’s violent past and present. This is a feature-film debut and coming-of-age film with much warm, laughs, heartbreak and depth.

Talk show: the position, point of view and importance of female filmmakers
As in many social areas, there is also a growing interest in the film industry for the role that gender plays. The film sector is pre-eminently a place where popular ideas about masculinity and femininity are reflected, but above all can be reshaped. In films, outdated images can be debunked and new stories find the spotlights, making it an important ally or even catalyst for cultural change. In this talk with WCA / Rialto director Raymond Walravens and writer / opinion maker Simone Zeefuik, we investigate the position of female filmmakers and how they distinguish themselves from male filmmakers. The talk show is led by filmmaker Tessa Boerman.

This talk show is a collaboration between Amsterdam Roots Festival, World Cinema Amsterdam and Rialto.
