Sorda
In 2021, Spanish director Eva Libertad teamed up with Nuria Muñoz to make the short film Sorda (Spanish for deaf), which tells the story of a couple in which she is deaf and he can hear. The film, shot largely in sign language, stars deaf actress Miriam Garlo, who is also Libertad's sister. Libertad revisited the subject and developed it further, resulting in a feature film with the same title and once again starring Garlo. In this story, which she wrote herself, she shows how difficult it is for a deaf person to find a place in a world that is not equipped for them.
Ángela and Hector are a happy couple, despite the fact that she is deaf and he is not. They are looking forward to the arrival of their first child, but once it is born, their marriage is thrown off balance. How should they raise the child, in which language? How can they prevent Ángela from feeling excluded? Awarded the Panorama Audience Award at the last Berlinale.
