The Golden Spurtle
In the small Scottish village of Carrbridge, beautifully situated in the Highlands, the World Porridge Making Championship has been held every year since 1994. The rules are simple: only oatmeal, water and salt may be used. The winner not only takes home the title of world champion, but also The Golden Spurtle, a gold-plated version of a wooden spurtle, the spatula that has been used in Scotland since the 15th century to stir porridge. This year is a special edition, as it is the last time that Charlie Miller, who is struggling with his health, will be at the helm.
Porridge is a simple and comforting dish without pretensions. The same can be said of this documentary by Greek-Australian director Constatine Costi. He portrays the event and its participants with great warmth and humour, without making fun of those involved. A very tasty film!
