Stalker
The enigmatic guide Stalker leads an inquisitive scientist and a writer looking for inspiration through the so-called Zone, a forbidden, sealed-off, waste-filled area where laws of common sense do not apply. The trio embark on a spiritual, hallucinatory journey through an area beyond civilization, heading for a mysterious room where a human being is not only confronted with his deepest fears, but which also grants a person's innermost desires.
In the 1980s, Stalker, based on the sci-fi novel Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers, was a real cult film; its atmosphere of nuclear doom, the anarchist storyline and the bleak post-industrial landscape the three men cross, seamlessly connected to the no-future pessimism characterizing those years. "The main theme of Stalker is (...) how a man suffers if he has no self-respect," director Andrei Tarkovsky wrote.
