Out Stealing Horses

Are we the main characters in our own lives, can we shape our own fate, or are we subject to forces beyond our control and merely onlookers of our own lives? These are the questions Norwegian writer Per Petterson raises in his best-selling novel Out Stealing Horses. Director Hans Petter Moland has adapted the book to the screen, reserving a central role for the breathtakingly beautiful Norwegian landscape.

1999: after his wife's death three years ago, 67-year-old Trond has withdrawn to a small village close to the Swedish border. A chance encounter with an acquaintance from long ago brings back memories of his childhood and the beautiful summer of 1948 he spent with his father. It was the summer in which he experienced love for the first time, but also death, as well as the summer in which he learned about his father's past.
