The Barefoot Emperor
In 2016, directorial duo Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth shot their madcap mockumentary King of the Belgians which follows Nicolaas III, the somewhat timid king of Belgium. Due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland, Nicolaas and his entourage, on official visit in Turkey, cannot fly back to Belgium, where a political crisis is rocking the country. They are forced to travel overland. In The Barefoot Emperor the story continues.
Nicolaas has arrived in Sarajevo, where he faints after suffering a wound to his ear. When he comes to, he finds himself in a luxurious and rather unusual sanatorium on a Croatian island, led by the authoritarian director Dr. Otto Kroll. Feeling better, Nicolaas wants to return home. Kroll however won't let him go, having forged "revolutionary" plans for a new Europe, in which Nicolaas is to play an important part. Starring Peter Van den Begin, Udo Kier, Geraldine Chaplin in a double role, and more.
