Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu has a keen eye for familial relationships. Take for example Like Father, Like Son and Golden Palm winner Shoplifters. He manages to identify the raw spots very precisely, though always with humour and warmth. Often the sources of conflict lie in the past. This is also the case in his latest film, La vérité, a mother-daughter drama set in France, with an all-star cast including Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke.
Actress Fabienne (Deneuve), the grande dame of French cinema, has published her memoirs titled The Truth. To celebrate this, her daughter Lumir (Binoche) returns from New York to Paris with her husband Hank (Hawke) and their daughter. It immediately becomes clear that the relationship between Fabienne and Lumir is not warm. Lumir is piqued that her mother has left out certain things in her memoirs. A confrontation is inevitable.
