Bacurau

On Mon August 10 with English subs at 9:50 pm

Destined for cult status, this outstanding Brazilian film is a mix of western, thriller and low-budget science fiction. Directors Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles (Neighboring Sounds, Aquarius) started working on Bacurau ten years ago, yet its tone is still surprisingly topical and critical. Conservative Brazilians were generally not amused, but with over a million visitors the film nevertheless was a big hit in Brazil.

The near future. After the death of her grandmother Carmelita, Teresa returns to her native village of Bacurau somewhere in the arid northeast of Brazil. Soon, strange things start happening: the water supply is cut off, rogue animals are stampeding through the streets, empty coffins litter the roadside. Concerns increase significantly when the village turns out to have disappeared from the satellite maps and all phone connections are lost. The close community must defend itself, that much is clear. Against which enemy though?
