In his debut film, video artist Janis Rafa offers a rather uncommon view on the relationship between man and animal by zooming in on the more unpleasant, reeking sides without restraint. One way is by capturing the aesthetics of decay in beautifully stylized images, thus producing a strangely amazing film about the thin line between life and death, but also about the deep connection between man and his pet.
Somewhere in a run-down industrial landscape, a young couple is making love in their car before getting on with their work: picking up dead pets, dropping them off at the pet crematorium and eventually returning the ashes to their owners. Astonished to see so many dead animals along the side of the road, they decide to deal with these carcasses in their spare time, making sure they are cremated with equal care. One day they themselves hit an animal while driving. 2020 IFFR award winner.
