Invasion of the Body Snatchers
On a busy road, a man is desperately trying to flag a passing car, but everyone drives on. Eventually, he is picked up by the police and taken to the station. The man is Dr. Miles Bennel, a family doctor with an incredible story from the small town of Santa Mira, California. Bennel has increasingly been seeing people who are convinced that their loved ones are no longer the same people, but rather cold replicas. A case of mass hysteria, Bennel thinks at first, soon discovering what's really going on though: alien pods have landed on earth, with the ability to duplicate all individuals, including their memories, but not their emotions. They take over when you fall asleep...
Director Don Siegel, Clint Eastwood's teacher, based his haunting masterpiece on Jack Finney's sci-fi novel The Body Snatchers. Was it a film about the greatly feared communists, who also lived unrecognizably among ordinary people? Siegel himself denied this.
