The War of the Worlds

On Sunday, 30 October 1938, millions of Americans panicked while hearing a radio news broadcast reporting that Martians were invading New Jersey. They didn't realize that they were listening to a rather realistic radio drama by Orson Welles, who made the eponymous story of the British writer H.G. Wells immediately world famous. Another fifteen years later, the story was made into a film.

A meteor crashes near the California town of Pine Summit. Scientist Clayton Forrester, who is on a fishing trip in the area, sets off to investigate; the impact site is still too hot however. Villagers who come to take a look must pay for their curiosity with their life. The Martians that have landed have far from peaceful intentions, wielding powerful weapons that seem invincible. Even the army is unable to tackle the situation. Is this the end of humanity?
