Lola

What is the level of morality in West Germany at the time of the "Wirtschaftswunder"? Rather questionable, as Fassbinder shows in many of his films. The country is populated by people of suspect character who seem to be motivated only by monetary gain. This is no different in the witty film Lola, an homage to Von Sternberg's Der Blaue Engel (1930).

1957: Like many German cities, Coburg is being rebuilt, with mainly the élite benefitting: the mayor, the chief of police, the bank president, and especially property developer Schuckert (Mario Adorf). He also owns a brothel where singer/prostitute Lola (Barbara Sukowa) is the biggest attraction. One day the upright civil servant von Böhm (Armin Mueller-Stahl) turns up, determined to tackle rampant corruption. Everything changes when he meets Marie-Louise, with whom he falls in love. Marie-Louise is Lola's real name.
