The Favourite
Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos depicts worlds that are absurd and populated by people who, to put it mildly, display strange and strange behaviour. Take The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. This is no different in his new film, The Favourite. Its story is set in the past, in the early 18th century English court, where scheming and rivalry between three female characters are at play.
England is at war with France. At the English court, people seem to be more into duck racing and endless pineapple eating. Queen Anna (Olivia Colman), mentally and physically frail, rules in name, but it's her best friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) who actually governs the country. Then Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, looking for employment and finding work as a chambermaid. Abigail is ambitious and crafty though... Awarded in Venice and more.
