Memoria
Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul is the master of slow cinema, with films to his name frequently exploring the relationship between dreams, nature and (homo)sexuality in a slow and meditative way. Take for example masterpieces like Tropical Malady and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. Memoria, a strange elliptical tale of memory, is his first feature made outside Thailand and also his first with an international cast, including star actress Tilda Swinton.
While staying in Colombia, Jessica Holland (Swinton), a woman from Scotland, is awoken from a sleep one night by a loud bang. She is unable to trace its origin, though, and also appears to be the only one who heard it. Determined to figure out the meaning of the bang, she even decides to consult a sound engineer, Hernán, who attempts to recreate the sound in his studio. Still, only Jessica can hear it.
