The Capote Tapes

The success of his books Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood made writer Truman Capote (1924-1984) a household name in the America of the 1960s and 1970s. His next project, Answered Prayers, would be his magnum opus. The book was to be set in a world full of glamour where Capote was a welcome guest: the high society of New York. His girlfriends, the ladies from this elite, awaited the novel with fear and fascination because of wild rumours circulating about the manuscript, which was said to be filled with scandal.

Shortly after Capote's death in 1984, a journalist conducted dozens of interviews with friends and enemies of the celebrated author. These recordings were never released. Until now. The Capote Tapes is a tribute to one of the most colourful people of the twentieth century: an icon of literature, but because of his openness about his sexual orientation in a time when that was unheard of, certainly also for the queer community.
