High Noon

"The most un-American thing I’ve seen in my whole life." So said western icon John Wayne about this suspenseful film with its story of cowardice, courage and community spirit, told in real time. Many contemporaries saw the film as too left wing, but other views were also held, as the four Oscars it won demonstrated. Today, High Noon is considered one of the best westerns ever made.

Marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper) of the small town of Hadleyville hangs up his badge, as he is planning to marry Amy (Grace Kelly), a Quaker and pacifist. Then word arrives that the notorious criminal Frank Miller and his gang are on their way to Hadleyville, seeking revenge on Kane, who had Miller convicted previously. Amy proposes to leave immediately, Kane decides to stay however. He turns to the townspeople for support, but they all turn their backs on him. When Miller arrives, Kane has to face him alone.
