Moulin Rouge
A whirlwind is the best way to describe this third film by Baz Luhrmann. Effortlessly, he manages to combine spectacular sets, beautiful costumes and rousing music into a compelling story about love and jealousy. The fact that the story is set around 1900 did not prevent Luhrmann from also using music by, for instance, The Beatles, Nirvana and Madonna. The result earned him numerous film awards, including two Oscars. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor play the lead roles.
British writer Christian (McGregor) arrives in Paris in 1899 to live the life of a bohemian. There, he meets the painter Toulouse-Lautrec, who takes him to the famous Moulin Rouge nightclub. There he meets the beautiful courtesan Satine (Kidman), the club's big star. He falls head over heels in love with her and she too has feelings for him. But she already belongs to the rich and unscrupulous Duke of Monroth.
