What began as the dream of chocolate sales representative Anton Pieter du Mée has grown into the cinema of choice for lovers of quality cinema. Whilst other cinemas in Amsterdam often focus on the latest blockbusters, Rialto screens precisely those films you’re less likely to find elsewhere.
Our historic building on Ceintuurbaan has been a home to the best the international film world has to offer for a century. Here you can see not only the latest arthouse productions, but also classics brought to life on the big screen. This makes Rialto a unique destination in the Amsterdam West and South region, with an appeal that extends far beyond that of a mere cinema.

At Rialto, we screen a varied programme of films every week that ventures beyond the beaten track. Our screening week runs from Thursday to Wednesday, with different screenings every day. Each month, you can look forward to a selection that reflects the diversity of world cinema.
From in-depth documentaries to gripping dramas, from quirky indies to international masterpieces – our programme features films that move, challenge and entertain you. We screen many titles in their original language. Of course, we ensure that Dutch subtitles are provided. English subtitles are also regularly available. This means that both local and international visitors can enjoy what we have to offer.

Two unique venues for experiencing film
Rialto De Pijp
The historic Rialto De Pijp venue exudes cinematic history. With its distinctive façade and intimate auditoriums, it offers an authentic cinema experience combined with modern comforts. After your film, you can chat about what you’ve just seen in our cosy café, whilst enjoying a drink or a light snack.
Rialto VU
Since 2021, we have had a second modern venue on the campus of VU University Amsterdam. This contemporary space is particularly popular with students and offers the same high-quality film programme in a fresh, accessible setting. In this way, we bring the best cinema to different parts of Amsterdam.
Practical information for your visit
Booking tickets is easy via our website. You can view all films online in advance, including trailers, and order your tickets straight away. For frequent visitors, the Cineville Pass offers unlimited access to all regular screenings, not only at Rialto but at many cinemas throughout Amsterdam.
We offer special discounts for students, and families with children are also very welcome – we regularly feature films suitable for children in our programme. Our venues are easily accessible by public transport, with both locations well served by tram and bus connections.
