A rich history within Amsterdam’s film scene
Rialto has been a household name in Amsterdam for over a century. Starting out as the dream of chocolate salesman and film enthusiast Anton Pieter du Mée, Rialto grew to become one of the city’s oldest and most distinctive cinemas. Du Mée believed in the power of film as a cultural and educational medium – a vision that remains central to our programming.
In the 1980s, the cinema was given a new lease of life when a group of enthusiastic young film lovers took it over. They recognised that Amsterdam needed a more diverse range of films than the standard offering. This passion for international cinema, from documentaries to arthouse classics, remains at the heart of what Rialto has to offer.

In addition to international films, we regularly screen Dutch productions, often with English subtitles, so that both locals and international visitors can enjoy the best that Dutch cinema has to offer.
Two unique locations in the city
Rialto De Pijp: a historic cinematic experience
In the heart of De Pijp, on Ceintuurbaan, you’ll find our historic main building. This heritage-listed building exudes film history. With three intimate screens and a cosy café, this is the perfect spot for an evening of cinema in an authentic setting. Here you can experience the atmosphere of a traditional arthouse cinema, but with modern facilities and excellent picture quality.
Rialto VU: modern cinema on campus
Since 2021, Rialto has had a second location on the campus of VU University Amsterdam. This modern cinema offers the same carefully curated programme as the main venue, but in a contemporary setting. Perfectly situated in Amsterdam Zuid, Rialto VU is easily accessible for both students and local residents.

We regularly have screenings suitable for families, whilst students can take advantage of special rates. Cineville pass holders are, of course, also very welcome and can enjoy our film selection without restriction.
