The First Slam Dunk
Between 1990 and 1996, many episodes of the manga Slam Dunk, a graphic novel about the basketball team of a Japanese high school, were published. That manga, by Takehiko Inoue, was also adapted into a long-running television series. There was one problem: those who had not read or seen everything from the beginning found it difficult to follow the story. Takehiko has now remedied that problem by reducing the story to one beautifully animated film.
Ryota Miyagi from Okinawa is the point guard on the Shohoku High School basketball team. He is an excellent player, but then he follows in the footsteps of his older brother Sota, who was a basketball hero at the same school. When Sota unexpectedly dies, Ryota begins to doubt everything. But the motivation to play basketball is still strong enough to confront their biggest rivals from Sannoh High School, allegedly a much stronger team.
