Cairo 678 - Cinéma Arabe

This film discloses one of the biggest taboos in Egypt: sexual harassment on the streets of Cairo. It takes place on a daily basis, but is hardly ever talked about. The victims keep silent out of shame. A woman who doesn't accept it would be news. Cairo 678 connects a series of actual events to tell a story about breaking the silence.

Three women are experiencing various forms of harassment, from grabbing to violent attacks. One of them calls on other women to stand up for themselves, another starts a court case despite obstruction by the authorities. The third one takes the law into her own hands.

Running from the war, Hêvî (‘hope’ in Kurdish) and Walat await the human trafficker who will drive them across the border in the freezing cold. Beyond the mountains the couple will be safe, but they have a ways to go. Once they are on their way, the driver tells Walat to cross the border on foot. Hêvî stays behind with him.
