Gimme Shelter (re-release)

How one concert marked the end of an era. Four months after Woodstock, the legendary pop festival where the Love Generation celebrated its hippie high mass, The Rolling Stones toured the United States. The last two concerts of that tour were captured on film; at Madison Square Garden in New York and at Altamont Speedway in San Francisco. The latter concert, which was free to attend, attracted 300,000 people. Among them a bunch of Hells Angels, who had been hired by the organisation to keep order. That is where things went wrong: almost literally under the eyes of the Stones, violent clashes took place between the visitors and the Angels, with the sad low point being the death of 18-year-old Meredith Hunter, who was stabbed to death.

Directors Albert Maysles, David Maysles & Charlotte Zwerin captured the events. They show a band having to watch helplessly as everything derails, while they stand around making music. The days of flower children were definitely over.
