It cost $8 million to make Pulp Fiction, most of which went on the actors' salaries. A very cheap film, in other words. But its success, especially financially, was unprecedented: worldwide, the film grossed some $214 million.
On 1 December 1994, this masterpiece by Quentin Tarantino had its Dutch premiere. Exactly thirty years later, the film will be re-released in Dutch cinemas.
Pulp Fiction
In 1992, a bright new star appeared in the firmament of cinema: Quentin Tarantino. With his debut film Reservoir Dogs, he put a whole new spin on the crime genre by inimitably combining careless violence with very witty dialogue; his characters prefer to indulge in small talk. Two years later, it became clear how brightly Tarantino's star would shine when his second film was released: Pulp Fiction. A non-chronologically told crime story full of bizarre twists and scintillating dialogue. The film won dozens of awards, including the Golden Palm at Cannes and an Oscar for Best Screenplay. That success was partly due to its all-star cast, including John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis.
Two hitmen, Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega, are tasked by their boss Marsellus Wallace to recover a stolen suitcase. The same Wallace asks Vincent to look after his wife Mia because he has to go away for a few days himself. And then there is Butch Coolidge, aging boxer, who wins a match he was supposed to have lost.
