In Liebe, Eure Hilde

Berlin, 1942, the court: ‘Why didn't you report your husband?’ Defendant Hilde Coppi replies, ‘For love of him’. Hilde, arrested by the Gestapo not long before, was a member of die Rote Kapelle, an anti-Nazi resistance group, as was her husband Hans, who had also been a member of the Communist Party . They met in 1939; two years later they married. Despite the constant threat of all the Nazi violence, it is an intensely happy period for Hilde. In September 1942, both are arrested; Hans is executed shortly afterwards, unbeknownst to Hilde. She is then eight months pregnant.

In this film, German director Andreas Dresen tells the true story of a woman who turns out to be stronger than she thought, a woman who drew strength from her convictions but especially from the love for her husband. Dresen does so with nuance and without effect, making the tragedy all the harder the harsher. Starring Liv Lisa Fries.
