Grave of the Fireflies

In June 1985, Studio Ghibli opened its doors in Tokyo, a film studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, among others. Countless animated films were made at this studio, which dramatically changed the face of the genre. With fantastically animated films such as Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and The Boy and the Heron, Myazaki in particular gained great international recognition. But co-founder Takahata has also made extraordinary films, such as the also beautifully animated Grave of the Fireflies, a gripping war story based on Akiyuki Nosaka's autobiographical short story of the same name. The well-known and highly critical American film critic Roger Ebert considered it one of the best war films ever made.

At the end of WWII, Japan is under heavy fire. Seita and his younger sister Setsuko have lost their mother in a bombing, while their father is also gone. The two of them have to survive in a chaotic world ravaged by war and hunger.
