Johan is a reed cutter somewhere in the north of the Netherlands. His work has become routine: he cuts the reeds, collects them and then burns the waste.. At the end of the day, he goes home. But that routine comes to an abrupt end when he finds the lifeless body of a girl among the reeds. The authorities quickly conclude that someone from outside the community is responsible for the girl's death, but Johan is convinced that it must have been someone from his own community. He becomes obsessed with the case and at the same time increasingly concerned for the safety of his granddaughter Dana.
In this feature film debut, written and directed by Sven Bresser, the lead role is played by Gerrit Knobbe, a man with no acting experience who is a reed cutter in real life. His expressive face is shown to its best advantage in the phenomenally captured Dutch landscape.
