Het geheim van Mariƫnburg
A curse hangs over Mariƫnburg, the former sugar plantation not far from Paramaribo. When the Netherlands finally abolished slavery in 1863, there was a shortage of labour. Poor farmers were therefore recruited, mainly from India and Java, to come and work on the plantation. Working conditions were so appalling that in 1902 a large group of workers rebelled. The Dutch authorities cracked down hard, resulting in dozens of deaths. Covered with quicklime, the bodies were thrown into a mass grave, leading the relatives of the Hindu victims to believe that their souls can no longer be reincarnated.
Twenty-year-old Reshna, a woman of Hindustani descent, is studying economics in The Hague. When her father, who lives in Suriname, falls ill, she decides to visit him. She is warmly welcomed by her niece Sadhana, who tells her all about her family's history. Meanwhile, it has become clear that her father contracted his unexplained illness in Mariƫnburg, prompting Reshna to investigate. This does not remain without consequences...
