The History of Sound
Boston, 1917: Lionel Worthing, raised in a poor farming family in Kentucky, has a great musical talent, which has earned him a place at the Boston Conservatory. There he meets fellow student David Smith, who grew up with his wealthy uncle. The differences between the two are great, but they share a love of folk music. That love is the foundation for a close and warm friendship. World War I separates the two, but in 1920 David contacts Lionel again, asking him to accompany him on a project to collect folk songs in rural New England. It is a happy time for the two, that leads to a love affair. But what will happen when the project is completed?
Homosexuality often plays a prominent role in the work of South African director Oliver Hermanus. Think of his films Skoonheid and Moffie. In his new film, he paints a warm portrait of love between two men at a time when this was still taboo. Starring Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor.
