Joe Speedboot
In 2005, Tommy Wieringa published his fourth novel, Joe Speedboot. This successful novel marked Wieringa's definitive breakthrough with the general public. The first plans to adapt the story for film were made that same year, but differences of opinion between the film producer and Wieringa meant that nothing came of those plans. Now, twenty years later, the novel has finally been made into a film. Sam de Jong (Goldie, Met mes) directed the film, with Daan Buringa and Tobias Kersloot playing the leading roles.
Fourteen-year-old Fransje Hermans from the sleepy village of Lomark ends up in a wheelchair after a bizarre accident. Except for one arm, he cannot move, and he can no longer speak. Life seems hopeless. But everything changes with the arrival of an adventurous and reckless newcomer: Joe Speedboot. By chance, Fransje and Joe get to know each other and, miraculously, a special friendship develops between the two. Perhaps, thanks to Joe, Fransje will still be able to realise some of his dreams.
