The Man Who Fell to Earth

In the early 1970s, British director Nicolas Roeg's career took off in a blaze. During those years, he made Performance, Walkabout and Don't Look Now, films that are now considered cult classics. The same applies to the film that followed: The Man Who Fell to Earth, based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. The lead role in this philosophical science fiction film is played by David Bowie, the then already famous pop artist who, in Roeg's eyes, had exactly the right elusive charisma.

An alien crashes his vehicle on Earth, a creature in search of water to save his drying home planet. He disguises himself as a human and uses his alien technology to build a successful business. Ultimately, he wants to build a space base from which he can travel back to his own planet. In the meantime, he has met Mary-Lou, a woman with whom he falls in love.
