The Bride!
Mary Shelley's 1818 horror novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for filmmakers. American director James Whale filmed it in 1931 and came up with a sequel four years later: The Bride of Frankenstein. The latter film inspired Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter) to make this daring and innovative remake, for which she wrote the screenplay herself. The leading roles are played by Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley, with Annette Bening, Penelope Cruz and Jake Gyllenhaal also making appearances.
The creature (Bale), once brought to life by Dr. Frankenstein, feels lonely and so approaches Dr. Euphronious (Bening) with the request that she create a companion for him. And she does: from the body of a murdered young woman, she creates the Bride (Buckley). However, no one could have foreseen the consequences of the explosive romance between the monster and the Bride.
