A Family

What happens when a marriage ends in a bitter divorce? How does that affect the children involved, who inevitably have to make decisions they really don't want to make? Dutch director Mees Peijnenburg shows us in his new film, a story told in two chapters from the perspective of two children. Starring Pieter Embrechts, Carice van Houten, Finn Vogels, and Celeste Holsheimer.

Fourteen-year-old Eli and his sister Nina, two years his senior, see their parents Jacob and Maria's once happy marriage end in a nasty divorce. The issue of custody comes before the judge, who asks the two teenagers what they want. Their wishes are diametrically opposed: Eli would prefer everything to go back to the way it was, while Nina would rather have left the family behind yesterday than today. All this turmoil takes a heavy toll on their relationship and their happiness in life.
