Bouchra

Thirty-five-year-old Bouchra is a coyote, as well as a lesbian Moroccan filmmaker who now lives and works in New York. Her mother, Aïcha, who is also a coyote, knows about it, but finds it difficult to accept. When Bouchra came out, the two didn’t speak for nine years. Bouchra wants to make a film about a queer filmmaker from Casablanca who moved to New York to start a new life there. But how should she tell this semi-autobiographical story? Details are missing, so she picks up the phone to call her mother. Perhaps this film can bridge the gap between mother and daughter.

This imaginative and highly witty narrative, the first feature-length animated film by documentary filmmaker Orian Barki and visual artist Meriem Bennan, uses anthropomorphic characters to depict the complex relationship between a queer daughter and her mother, resulting in a remarkable blend of documentary and fiction, in which art and reality merge into a single whole.
