Our Land
A piece of land, three armed men and a community that refuses to be driven out: this documentary follows a conflict that has had a profound impact on the lives of the Chuschagasta people in northern Argentina. When businessman Darío Amín lays claim to their land, the situation escalates and community leader Javier Chocobar is murdered during a confrontation captured on camera. What follows is a years-long struggle for recognition, justice and the right to remain. For the community, more is at stake than mere property: it touches on their history and very right to exist.
With Our Land, Lucrecia Martel makes her first documentary, following internationally acclaimed feature films such as Zama and La Ciénaga. She interweaves the arduous legal process with personal stories and a longer history of land grabbing in Latin America. The result is a multi-layered and poignant film that shows how bureaucracy, power and language can determine who is heard, and who is not.
