Apocalypse Now: Final Cut

"This film isn't about Vietnam; it is Vietnam," Francis Ford Coppola famously remarked about his superb war film, an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness. It not only contains many scenes that are forever etched into our collective memory (the helicopter attack with Wagner's music, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning," "The horror! The horror!"), also legendary is the insanely complex production's making-of, vastly exceeding its budget and with lead actor protagonist Martin Sheen suffering a heart attack, Marlon Brando notoriously difficult to work with, and so on.

During the Vietnam War, U.S. Army Captain Willard is tasked by army command with finding and assassinating the brilliant renegade Colonel Kurtz. Kurtz is running a private army in the middle of the jungle, waging its own war. The mission, which sends Willard up the Nung River, turns into an increasingly hallucinatory descent into hell filled with apocalyptic scenes. In addition to Sheen and Brando, starring Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Laurence Fishburne and more.

This Final Cut from 2019 is made from a new high-resolution scan with a revised sound mix (now with the ultra-low sounds of the helicopter) and is twenty minutes shorter than Apocalypse Now Redux from 2001, but fourty minutes longer than the first version from 1979.
