Through the Olive Trees

Kiarostami is a master at adding layers to the reality he presents in his films. Viewers are made to believe they are seeing documentary footage, then they find out that it is actually fiction, which is presented as documentary in yet another film. The third instalment of Kiarostami's Koker trilogy reveals how the filmmaker does this.

Hossein Rezai, a local stonemason, has become an actor. He is part of the cast of And Life Goes On, in which he and the young student Tahereh play a newlywed couple. Hossein is however also in love with Tahereh off screen and proposes to her. As he is poor and illiterate, the girl's family find his proposal insulting. The girl then tries to avoid him as much as possible, meanwhile the filming goes on. When the film director learns about this he tries to advise Hossein what to do.
