Queer Pioneers is a special programme by Rialto, focusing on filmmakers who have pushed boundaries around sexuality, sexual orientation and gender. Through their work, they have left a lasting mark on both cinema and political discourse. On Sunday, 3 May, Rialto will screen L.A. Zombie by Bruce LaBruce. Prior to the screening, Queer Pioneers curator Renske Diks will speak with the director.
This edition of Queer Pioneers centres on L.A. Zombie (2010), a film that provoked widely varying reactions worldwide and combines horror, explicit queer cinema and social critique. The film follows an alien zombie creature wandering through Los Angeles, responding in provocative ways to death, desire and alienation. With this radical work, LaBruce questions the boundaries of taste, morality and censorship.
Director Bruce LaBruce, a pioneer of the queercore punk movement, is known for his uncompromising stance on artistic freedom. L.A. Zombie, starring French adult film actor François Sagat, was both praised and banned internationally and sparked intense debates about censorship. This Queer Pioneers screening is presented in collaboration with IQMF, No Limits Art Castle, BUTT magazine and the Erwin Olaf Foundation.
