The Favourite
The worlds sketched by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos are often populated by people whose behaviour is strange to say the least. Think of The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. In the film that followed, The Favourite, it is no different. This time he situated the story at the English court of the early 18th century, where a real intrigue unfolds between three women.
England and France are at war, but the English court still hosts duck races and devours endless pineapples. In name only, Queen Anna (Olivia Colman) rules the country, but she is physically and mentally weak. Her best friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) is the one who actually runs the country. One day, one Abigail (Emma Stone) presents herself - she looks for a job and gets one: as a servant. But Abigail is ambitious and very shrewd... Lanthimos won the Grand Jury Prize in Venice, Colman the Oscar for Best Actress.
