The new Integration Act came into force on 1 January 2022. Since then, newcomers are no longer responsible for their own integration, but rather the municipalities where they have settled. To this end, the municipality of Breda has developed the Integration Customer Journey, in which newcomers are introduced to Dutch society: from housing and finances to language, culture and finding work. They are supported in this by local residents who act as their buddies.

In this documentary, filmmaker Ton van Zantvoort follows some of these newcomers on their “journey”. If one thing becomes clear, it is how complex Dutch society is organised. The question is therefore justified: can we expect newcomers to adapt to a society that is increasingly resembling a maze? Van Zantvoort spent four years working on this bitterly comical look at a system where good intentions clash with bureaucracy and rules.
