Meer dan Babi Pangang
Deep-fried pieces of pork with atjar tjampoer and sweet and sour sauce, in other words: babi pangang, undoubtedly one of the most popular dishes served in the countless Chinese-Indonesian restaurants that once dotted the Netherlands. Where does this dish originate from? This is the question that Chinese-Dutch filmmaker Julie Ng attempts to answer in this documentary. The investigation begins at Golden House, her father's restaurant in Rozenburg, South Holland. She discovers that the dish originated from a cross-pollination of Chinese and Indonesian cultures, but also Dutch culture; after all, many dishes were tailored to the tastes of the average Dutch person.
As Ng searches for the origins of babi pangang, she also discovers more and more about her own Chinese background. The film is not only an ode to the first generation of Chinese Dutch people who shaped the culinary landscape in the Netherlands through hard work in the last century, but also a personal and emotional exploration of Ng's cultural and culinary identity.
