Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos is on a roll: After the huge success of Poor Things last year, he is already coming out with a new film: Kinds of Kindness, to be released July 4. All the more reason for Rialto to re-screen his five other great films: Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite and Poor Things.
What makes Lanthimos' films so special? It is not the themes themselves - family dynamics, the search for a partner, revenge, loyalty, betrayal and sexual fulfillment - that are so revolutionary. It is the way he depicts them: his film universe is absurd and hyperbolic, with larger-than-life characters and events that are both bizarre and unimaginable. This results in films that are as blackly comic as they are tragic. The combination of beautiful design and outstanding acting by great actors such as Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Willem Defoe makes Lanthimos' work more than special.
