When legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman first set foot on the island of Fårö, he knew he had found his home. He decided to stay and made several famous films there. The American couple Chris and Tony, two screenwriters, are both working on screenplays for their next projects, but are struggling with creative blocks. They retreat to the Swedish island, hoping to find inspiration in that iconic place. Chris is writing a story about Amy, a woman who has been invited to come to Fårö for a wedding and meets her ex, who is also one of the guests. While Chris is sharing it with Tony, the story comes to life.
This film-within-a-film by French director Mia Hansen-Løve, who previously made L'avenir, is a fascinating relationship drama à la Scenes from a Marriage while also giving an insight into the creative process of writing a screenplay. Above all, Bergman Island is a tribute to the Swedish master filmmaker. With Vicky Krieps, Tim Roth and Mia Wasikowska.
