107 Mothers

In the Ukrainian women's prison of Odessa, the pregnant Lesya is serving a seven-year sentence for the murder of her husband - a crime of passion. When her son Kolya is born there, he is allowed to stay with her and the other small children until his third birthday. Together, they lead a quiet and peaceful life. But when Kolya's third birthday comes near and no shelter has been found for him, Lesya's panic increases. Guardian Iryna urges her to contact her mother and sister so that they can take care of him and he will not end up in a shelter. It is the only glimmer of hope she has, while the farewell approaches.

Director Peter Kerekes spent years researching the ups and downs of women in prison, because he wanted to come as close to reality as possible. It is the stories of 107 of these imprisoned mothers that inspired this film.
