Alcarràs - Expat Cinema
Uncertain times are coming for the Solé family. For as long as they can remember, summer has been the time they harvest peaches from their orchard in Alcarràs, a small town in Catalonia. But the owner of the land has announced that the peach trees will be cut down to make way for solar panels. These plans are causing much unrest and division in this large and close-knit family; some family members want to keep fighting for their home and land, while others seem resigned to the new situation.
How does a traditional way of life relate to modern times? What happens when economic interests prevail over those of people and nature? These are the questions that director Carla Simón addresses in her second feature film. She does so based on a sensitive but never sentimental scenario that she wrote together with Arnau Vilaró. It earned her the Golden Bear at the last Berlinale.
