Under the motto ‘To be alike is the way of life’, citizens in a rather regimented society do not have a name, but a number. Moreover, everyone is obliged to wear a paper bag over their head; that way, no one stands out. But everything gets into an uproar when rumours emerge about a fabulous land of freedom where wearing a bag is not required. Just appointed as a councillor in the community, 197a gets into trouble when he falls in love with a free-spirited girl. The incidents that follow open his eyes to a new reality.
Director Ishan Shukla based this dystopian animated film on his own 2016 short film of the same name. The mix of 2D and 3D, possible thanks to the use of a video game engine, give the film a very sophisticated, film-noir-like look, making it an homage to classic dystopian films. Featuring the voices of Golshifteh Farahani, Asia Argento, Gaspar Noé and Lav Diaz, among others.
