After not having been there for years, Jérémie , an unemployed thirty-something, returns to his native village of Saint-Martial to attend the funeral of Jean-Pierre, his former employer, a man very close to his heart. His widow Martine welcomes his arrival and offers him shelter, while her son Vincent is also delighted to see his old playmate. However, that soon changes when Jérémie announces he is staying for the time being; Vincent begins to see Jérémie as an intruder. And then there is the local priest Philipp, who has his eye on Jérémie, and the somewhat sloppy loner Walter, in whom Jérémie is precisely very interested. Tensions rise between Jérémie and Vincent, and then someone in the village disappears.
Director Alain Guiraudie himself wrote the screenplay for this black comedy that is as unpredictable as it is outrageous, a story about loneliness and cramped secrecy, especially where sexual orientation is concerned.
