Sujo
Mexican kid Sujo is only four years old when his father Josue El Ocho, a member of a drug cartel, is shot dead by a rival gang. In that world, it is customary to then also kill all other male family members to prevent future revenge. From then on, Sujo is not sure of his life. His aunt Nemesia takes the child to her remote goat farm where she does her best to raise him safely. This is not easy, as the drug cartels' power reaches far. This becomes apparent years later when the teenage sons of Nemesia's friend Rosalia are about to enter the world of crime and try to drag Sujo down with them.
Films about Mexican drug cartels are often violent, but not this Sundance Film Festival award-winning drama by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, who wrote the screenplay themselves. In four chapters, they tell a hopeful and poetic story about a boy who chooses not to follow in his father's footsteps.
