Vermiglio

Italian Alps, 1944: village teacher Cesare, his wife Adele and their eight children live in the remote mountain village of Vermiglio. The war, which until then seemed far away, suddenly comes close when one day a deserted soldier shows up in the village: the Sicilian Pietro, who once saved the life of Cesare's brother-in-law and so he is given shelter in his hay barn. Lucia, the eldest daughter in the family, is very interested in him and the interest is mutual. Now that the war is almost over, better times seem to be ahead, but unfortunately not for the teacher's family.

Director Maura Delpero drew on her own family history for this story, which she obviously wrote herself. For instance, teacher Cesare is loosely based on her own grandfather. This story about parents and children, and about the impact of big events on small everyday life earned her several film awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at the last Venice Film Festival.
